Guru Angad Dev was born on March 31, 1504 in a village called Harike in Ferozepur district of the Punjab. His father, Bhai Pheru was a trader. His mother \'s name was Mata Ramo ji (also known as Mata Sabhirai, Mansa Devi, Daya kaur). His parents called him Lehna. Born to Hindu parents, he grew to be an ardent devotee of Goddess Durga. Lehna married Khivi and started a family. They had two son\'s Baba Dasu and Baba Dattu and two daughter\'s Bibi Amro and Bibi Anokhi.

One day while on a pilgrimage to worship Goddess Durga Lehna overheard the hymn of Japji sung. He learned that the words were composed by Guru Nanak Dev and was thrilled and made arrangements to visit Karatarpur to see Guru Nanak. Hisfirst meeting with Guru Nanak completely transformed him. He became the devoted disciple of the Guru and an eager follower of Sikhism and thereafter remained in Guru\'s service for about thirteen years.

Guru Nanak Dev selected Bhai Lehna Ji for Guruship due to his devotion and obedience on September 7th, 1539. Bhai Lehna was named Guru Angad Dev.

The Guru earned his own living by twisting coarse grass into strings used for cots. All offerings went to the common community fund. This demonstrates that it is necessary and honourable to do even the meanest productive work. It also emphasises that parasitical living is not in consonance with the mystic and moral path. In line with Guru Nanak\'s teaching, the Guru also declared that there was no place for passive recluses in the community.

Guru Angad invented the present form of the Gurmukhi script. It became the medium of writing the Punjabi language in which the hymns of the Gurus are expressed.

The institution of Langar was maintained and developed. The Guru\'s wife, Mata Khivi personally worked in the kitchen. She also served food to the members of the community and the visitors. Her devotion to this institution finds mention in Guru Granth Sahib.

Guru Angad Dev, following the example set by Guru Nanak Dev nominated Sri Amar Das as his successor (The Third Nanak) before his death. He presented all the holy scripts, including those he received from Guru Nanak Dev, to Guru Amar Das. He breathed his last on March 29, 1552 at the age of forty-eight.
